Do You Really Need Omega 3 in Your Protein Shake?

Do You Really Need Omega 3 in Your Protein Shake?

Omega 3 is one of the most widely consumed nutrients in the UK. Millions of people take it separately – in fish oil capsules, algae-based supplements, or through their diet. So the question of whether it belongs in a protein shake is a fair one.

The short answer: it depends on what you want from your shake. If you’re using Whey Protein 360 PLATINUM, Omega 3 is already included.

What is Omega 3?

Omega 3 refers to a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The main types are ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).

ALA is an essential fatty acid – the body cannot make it, so it must come from food or supplementation. Common dietary sources of ALA include flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts and certain plant oils.

Is Omega 3 worth having in a protein shake?

That depends on whether you’re already getting enough from your diet.

ALA is found in plant-based sources – flaxseed, chia, walnuts, hemp seeds, rapeseed oil. If your diet is low in these, including ALA in a daily protein shake is a convenient way to address that gap without an additional supplement.

If you already take a separate Omega 3 supplement or eat plenty of ALA-rich foods, the Omega 3 in PLATINUM adds to your existing intake. Either way, it contributes to the shake’s overall nutritional completeness.

The more relevant question is what else PLATINUM offers – because the Omega 3 is one of nine upgrades over GOLD, not the only one.

Which protein shakes include Omega 3?

Within our Whey Protein 360 range, only PLATINUM contains Omega 3. BLACK and GOLD do not include Omega 3.

Q: Does Whey Protein 360 PLATINUM contain Omega 3?
A: Yes. PLATINUM includes Omega 3 in the form of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). It is not present in BLACK or GOLD.
