What does protein powder do?

Protein powder is a concentrated source of protein that helps you meet your daily intake goals – usually mixed into a shake, smoothie, or everyday recipe. It delivers essential amino acids that support immunity, metabolism, energy levels, and overall wellbeing.  Most people use it as a simple, convenient way to fill gaps in their everyday diet. Do i need to workout to use protein powder?

No – protein powder is for anyone who wants to hit their daily protein target, not just people who exercise. Protein is an essential macronutrient that everybody needs, regardless of activity level. If your diet alone isn’t covering your daily protein needs, powder is a practical way to top it up – whether you’re a busy professional, following a plant-based diet, or simply want to eat better without overhauling your meals.

How to use protein powder

Mix one scoop with water, milk or a water alternative – then drink it whenever suits you. Alternatively, you can also incorporate protein powder into high-protein recipes. Common ways people use it as part of their daily routine include:

  • Blended into your morning smoothie for a nourishing start
  • Stirred into porridge, yoghurt, or baked goods for an easy protein boost
  • Mixed into a quick shake when lunch was lighter than planned
  • Used as a convenient top-up on busy days when whole food meals fall short

The research shows that timing doesn’t affect results – the most important thing is hitting your daily protein target consistently, whatever time of day works best for you.

When should i take protein powder?

Take it whenever it fits naturally into your day. There is no optimal time to take protein powder for general health  – morning, lunchtime, and evening are all equally effective. The priority is consistency, not timing.

How much protein powder should i take per day?

For most people, one to two scoops per day is enough. To work out the right amount for you:

  1. Calculate your daily protein target. A sedentary person needs roughly 0.8g per kg of body weight; an active person needs 1.2 – 2.2g per kg.
  2. Track how much protein you’re already eating through meals.
  3. Use protein powder to cover the gap.

Example: You weigh 85kg and are moderately active. Your daily target is ~100g of protein. Your meals provide around 80g. One scoop of protein (typically ~20g) covers the difference.

Do I need to use protein powder?

No – protein powder is optional and you can meet your protein needs through diet alone. However, protein powder can be a practical tool if you:

  • Follow a vegetarian or vegan diet and struggle to hit protein targets through food
  • Have a busy lifestyle and need a quick, reliable source of protein
  • Find your meals are consistently low in protein without much effort to change that

Whole foods should always make up the majority of your diet. Shakes are a convenient way to fill the gaps –  nothing more, nothing less.
