Conjugated linoleic acid or CLA is a natural supplement that has revolutionized the health and fitness industry. CLA has been demonstrated to be an efficient, potent and convenient fat loss and bodybuilding supplement. CLA is derived from natural sources and formulated with natural ingredients. CLA is a trans fatty acid that is derived from omega 6, an essential fatty acid that is obtained from pasture fed animals. Millions of people around the world have heard about CLA but do not have enough information about it. Is CLA Safe?

Side effects of CLA at normal doses

When used within the therapeutic doses, CLA may cause some rare and insignificant side effects that do not warrant discontinuation. Most of these effects occur in the gastrointestinal system and nausea, loose stools or diarrhoea and vomiting. Other mild side effects of CLA are fatigue and heartburn or acid indigestion. These side effects are usually common in the first two weeks of taking the supplement but wanes off with continued use.

 

Side effects of CLA at higher doses

If, for one reason or another, one ends up taking more CLA supplements than recommended for a time, some moderately severe side effects may arise. These side effects may include unexplained rash, limb swellings and difficulty in breathing. Very severe CLA side effects may include the following:

  • Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) has been reported in some people because CLA may cause insulin resistance.
  • It may be pro-inflammatory as has been indicated by presence C-reactive protein in people taking the supplement.
  • Larger doses may actually reduce the amount of good cholesterol or high density lipoproteins (HDLs) and this may predispose to hypercholestolemia and its attendant risks.

Such side effects may require medical attention and immediate discontinuation of the supplement.

Precautions and Warnings

In addition to the above discussed CLA side effects, there are other conditions in which this supplement should be taken with care. These include pregnancy and breastfeeding, diabetes mellitus as well as metabolic syndrome (this may increase risks for diabetes). The good news is that all these side effects are very rare and overdosing is also very uncommon so it is safe to use CLA. Taking CLA with food can reduce the risks of the mild side effects.  However, if you notice any of the above discussed side effects then you need to see a health professional immediately for medical advice.
