Citrulline Malate combines the organic salt Malate with the amino acid Citrulline. Research has shown that Citrulline Malate improves performance, speeds post-exercise recovery and reduces fatigue levels – both during exercise and beyond. Citrulline Malate can improve exercise endurance by enhancing the bodies’ ability to remove lactic acid and ammonia – which limit physical activity levels.
Citrulline Malate to Reduce Fatigue
Citrulline Malate is an effective means of improving exercise endurance by reducing fatigue levels. During exercise, the bodies’ demand for oxygen increases and the natural way of compensating is by increasing breathing rate. However, when the demand exceeds the bodies’ ability to deliver oxygen through breathing, the body adapts to the increased energy demands being placed upon it by producing energy without oxygen. This process (glycolysis) causes lactic acid to be produced, which limits exercise capacity. Enter CItrulline Malate. Research has demonstrated that Citrulline Malate supplementation increases the bodies’ capacity to provide oxygen to the muscles. Therefore, Citrulline Malate increases the bodies’ ability to work more efficiently and thus increases performance, whilst decreasing fatigue.
What is Lactic Acid?
Lactic Acid is produced when the body does not have enough oxygen to cope with the energy demands placed upon it during exercise (aerobic energy production). When the body does not have sufficient oxygen to generate the energy required, Lactic Acid is produced (anaerobic energy production). Lactic Acid allows glucose to be broken down and energy production to continue – therefore it is a necessary process to permit strenuous exercise to occur. However, high Lactic Acid levels limit the bodies’ effectiveness and reduce its capacity to continue exercising. This results in the burning sensation that is felt in the muscles during exercise and is often the reason that exercise is stopped or at least reduced – to allow oxygen balance to increase.
Citrulline Malate and Lactic Acid
Research has shown that Citrulline Malate enhances the bodies’ aerobic energy system. This reduces the bodies’ dependence upon the anaerobic system and reduces Lactic Acid build-up. In short, Citrulline Malate has been shown to improve performance by increasing fatigue resistance.
How much Citrulline Malate do I need and when should I take it?
Research indicates that two doses of between 3-7 grams of Citrulline Malate taken pre and post-workout will produce beneficial results.
