Dark Chocolate and Pretzel Protein Truffles

As you can probably tell from the 1,000+ sweet recipes on this website, I have a *bit* of a sweet tooth. I take care of it through making a bunch of healthy recipes but sometimes, just sometimes, I can’t be bothered making anything. Does that ever happen to you? You want something sweet and delicious and you want it NOW.

I was feeling like this the other day – the sweet tooth was properly rude and impatient, passive aggressive in its ways. So I opened the cupboard and combined these three things in a spoon:

Result? A sensation. An absolute sensation! And it made me think… what if…

Could we… Maybe… Do… THIS:
So I gave the idea a go.

Result? Delicious! Crunchy and sweet with a tiny bit of sea salt cutting through the whole thing to deliver a good ol’ fashioned punch of POW! It may sound weird to some of you, combining pretzels with a chocolate protein truffle but listen, it WORKS.

Now, obviously, if your tooth is being extremely authoritative just quench it with the spoon I drew above. But if you have a bit of time in your hands, and/or if you want to have some bite-sized truffles ready for when your tooth starts kicking, make these. Like all Pow recipes, this one’s quick. It’s easy, and dare I say it’s… de…li…cious!*

Chocolate Protein Truffles with Pretzels


1/8 cup whey protein
1/8 cup ground hazelnuts (could also use ground almonds)
1 tbsp almond milk (enough to bind the ingredients into a dough)
2 tbsp chocolate nut butter spread
5 whole baby pretzels
5 chopped baby pretzels
5 squares (50g) dark chocolate

Protein Pretzel Truffles Recipe


1. In a bowl, combine the whey protein, ground nuts (hazelnuts or almonds), chopped pretzels, chocolate spread and a tiiiiiiny bit of milk.
2. Mix into a dough. If your dough is too sticky, add a bit more of the ground nuts to dry it up and make it malleable. If it’s too dry, add a tad bit more of the milk.
3. Divide into 5 balls.
4. Melt your dark chocolate and coat the balls in the dark chocolate.
5. Top with a tiny pretzel.
6. Refrigerate for a couple of hours or leave in the fridge for 20 mins or until the chocolate sets.

Macros per truffle (out of the five you get from the ingredients above): 97kcals, 4g protein, 6g carbs and 6g fat.

Note: Do note that the macros of your truffles with depend on the kind of chocolate spread you use. You can go with one that is low in protein (like Nutella) and obviously your kcal will go up, sugars will go up, and your protein will go down. Or you can go with a no-sugar-added spread that’s high in protein and (relatively) low in sugar. If you want, as well, you COULD just use plain unflavored nut butter for this and some cocoa powder. Just bear in mind you’ll want to add some kind of sweetener to your mixture. Something like vanilla or toffee stevia drops would be fantastic or any kind of sweetener you like best to be honest. You can also mush in some dates in there for sweetness! Just play with the idea and have fun with this one.

*  I wonder, if someone did a search for the word ‘delicious’ on this site, whether the result would be over a million hits? It’s just one of those words, you know, hard to sub. I mean, sure, ‘tasty’ works, scrumptious too but that’s it I reckon because then you get into ‘yummy’ which sounds a bit babyish and TOO casual. ‘Appetizing’ is kind of overly detached, I find, as is ‘flavorsome.’ Finger-licking works but only if ACTUAL finger-licking is involved otherwise.. whatcha taaaalking about. I dig ‘knee-slappingly delicious’ but you can’t overuse that kind of thing and it does include the word delicious so it’s not exactly a solution per se. Same with ‘sky-punchingly delicious’ which I love because it describes foods like these truffles that surprise you with their… deliciousness, hehe 🙂
