1964 – Abebe Bikila again wins the marathon, this time less than six weeks after having his appendix removed.

1988 – Florence Griffith-Joyner from the USA sets the world record for the womens 100 metres at 10.62 she also sets the current world record of 21.34 for the womens 200 metres

2008 - Usain Bolt sets his first world record in the mens 200 metres for Jamaica at 19.30
